What Is Packshot Photography?
Packshot photography is a form of product photography focused on presenting an individual product clearly, accurately and consistently. Products are typically photographed against a clean white, neutral or transparent background with minimal visual distraction.
Packshots are widely used for eCommerce websites, online marketplaces, product catalogues, packaging, brochures and advertising because they allow customers to see the product itself without competing styling elements.
The objective is clarity and repeatability. When a range contains multiple products, the lighting, camera angle, scale, cropping and background should remain consistent so every image appears to belong to the same collection.
Packshot Lighting & Product Materials
Different materials require different lighting techniques.
Glossy plastics, polished metal, glass, matte packaging, transparent materials, fabric and textured surfaces all interact with studio lighting differently. A lighting setup that works well for a matte cardboard box may produce distracting reflections on a polished or transparent product.
We adjust diffusion, highlight placement, reflections and shadow density according to the product material and intended final image.
The aim is to clearly define the product's shape and surface while maintaining accurate colour, readable labels and natural-looking highlights.
White & Transparent Background Packshots
White-background packshots are commonly used for eCommerce stores, catalogues and marketplaces because they provide a clean and consistent presentation across large product ranges.
Where required, products can also be professionally deep etched and supplied as transparent PNG files. A transparent background provides greater flexibility for website layouts, catalogues and graphic design because the product can be positioned against different backgrounds without requiring additional photography.
Careful edge refinement is particularly important for products with fine details, transparent materials, reflective surfaces or irregular shapes.
Packshot Photography Angles
The most useful photography angle depends on the product and the information customers need to see.
A front-facing view is commonly used for packaging, bottles, boxes and products where labels or branding need to remain clearly visible.
Three-quarter views can provide greater depth and help explain the dimensional shape of a product, while side, rear, top or detail views may be useful where construction or additional features need to be shown.
For larger eCommerce ranges, we maintain consistent camera position, scale and cropping across similar products to create a coherent catalogue presentation.
Colour Accuracy & Product Consistency
Accurate colour is particularly important for eCommerce product photography because customers need the online image to represent the physical product as closely as possible.
During photography and post-production, we manage exposure, white balance, colour and tonal consistency across the product range.
We also consider consistency between photography sessions. When existing reference images are supplied, we can use them to help match framing, product scale, background and overall presentation so new products integrate more naturally with an established catalogue.
Packshot Photography for Product Ranges
Consistency becomes increasingly important when photographing large product collections.
A catalogue containing dozens or hundreds of products should look like one coherent visual system rather than a series of unrelated photographs. Camera height, lens choice, product position, lighting direction, background tone and cropping all contribute to that consistency.
Before larger projects, we can establish a reference image or agreed photography style that is then applied across the range.
This is particularly useful for retailers, manufacturers, wholesalers and eCommerce businesses that regularly add new products to an existing catalogue.
Professional Packshot Retouching
Post-production is an important part of professional packshot photography.
Depending on the product, retouching may include:
dust and minor blemish removal
colour correction
background removal
edge refinement
alignment and cropping
perspective correction
reflection clean-up
label and packaging refinement
tonal adjustment
consistency across a product range
The objective is to refine the image while maintaining an accurate representation of the physical product. Looking for photography beyond Packshot? Explore our Product Photography Sydney services for jewellery, cosmetics, accessories, footwear, packaging and general merchandise.
